The high profile contract negotiation and transfer saga between Bayern Munich and Alphonso Davies has lasted over a year. A few months ago, it felt like a foregone conclusion that Davies, the new Canada MNT captain, would be packing his bags this summer for a transfer to the kings of Europe, Real Madrid.
With the gloomy cloud hanging over Davies, he performed poorly throughout the Rückrunde. In an incredible moment of redemption, Davies scored a beautiful goal at the Bernabéu that almost eliminated Madrid and would have sent Bayern to the Champions League Final.
According to a report from The Athletic (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern sporting director Max Eberl reached a verbal agreement with Alphonso Davies’ agent, Nedal Huoseh. The offer met Davies’ demand for a salary that ranged between €14M-€16M. However, Eberl’s bosses immediately rejected the contract.
BFW Analysis
The coach said that he wants the player. The sporting director approved a reasonable raise for a 23-year old starter that would only make him the 10th-highest paid player on the team. The board folded its collective arms like a toddler.
The power struggle between Bayern’s board, management, and coaching staff has reached critical mass. If the club continues to treat every situation like this, the snowball effect could send Bayern into a dark age of mediocrity.
