Germany continues to perform well at EURO 2024, and Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gündogan has put himself at the heart of the team’s success in their 2-0 victory over Hungary as he justifies his selection as captain.
Gündogan assisted Jamal Musiala’s opener before going on to score Germany’s second goal of the match in the 67th minute, securing the victory for the hosts.
As captured by @iMiaSanMia, Gündogan had the following to say about the Hungary match and his new role for Germany:
Hungary had dangerous situations today, but that’s how the tournament is. When you get the chance, you have to be precise and efficient. I think we did that well. I always want to do my job on the pitch as best as possible. In this attacking position, where you often have to show up between the opponent’s lines and create passing options, it’s not so easy. But the feeling is getting better, especially with such guys around you.
While many Bayern Munich fans likely resent Gündogan for keeping Thomas Müller out of the lineup (writer’s note: I know I’m tempted to) or for taking the captain band away from Manuel Neuer, the harsh reality is that Gündogan deserves not only a position in the starting lineup but his role of captain.
Gündogan cuts a similar figure to that of Philipp Lahm, a quieter, level-headed leader who demands the highest level of performance from those around him. Even when talking about his impressive adaptation to a more attacking role, he praises his teammates, putting the group ahead of the individual.
On top of being a natural fit for the role, an added advantage of having Gündogan captain the squad is Julian Nagelsmann distancing himself from the commonly held notion that he gives Bayern players preferential treatment. Güdndogan’s distance from the drama of the Bundesliga aids in keeping the team’s focus on the task at hand.
