Germany has qualified for the Round of 16 at EURO 2024 but will be required to make a change after the suspension of center-back Jonathan Tah on yellow cards accumulation.
At this tournament, yellow cards do not reset until after the quarter-finals, and the Leverkusen center-back earned bookings in both the first and third group stage games, against Scotland and Switzerland, respectively. Borussia Dortmund’s left-footed Nico Schlotterbeck replaced him on Sunday — but Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann explained the race for inclusion in his next XI is wide open.
“Schlotti and [VfB Stuttgart defender Waldemar Anton] Waldi have a duel [for the spot],” Nagelsmann said in comments captured by Bild, via @iMiaSanMia. “We couldn’t bring both of them on against Switzerland, but both deserve it because they’re doing well.”
Tah’s center-back partner, Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger, is also on yellow card watch and carrying an injury concern as well. Could Nagelsmann rotate both his center-backs on Saturday?
Eintracht Frankfurt defender Robin Koch is the other center-back on the EUROs squad, while both starting and reserve defensive midfielders — Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich and BVB’s Emre Can — could step into the back line as well.
