Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Füllkrug was one of the players, who many thought would get a starting nod prior to Germany’s 2-0 victory over Denmark.
Instead, German national team boss and former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann opted to stick with Arsenal FC’s Kai Havertz, who would go on to score Germany’s first goal via a penalty kick.
Füllkrug said that he was not disappointed with his bench role.
“Disappointed is the wrong word. You always try to understand it [the decision]. The coach spoke to me. The content of the conversation stays between us. Of course you have your thoughts. But so far things have worked out pretty well. You have to say that. We have come through the tournament undefeated so far with the respective starting eleven and the substitutes. That’s also an argument [to keep things as they are],” Füllkrug told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Füllkrug’s time still could come. From here on out, nothing will be easy for the Germans and Füllkrug’s scoring ability could be in high demand.
