Man United believe they have a great chance at signing Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich this summer.
We’ve said it time and time again. Manchester United have to sign at least one centre-half this summer. The Old Trafford side lost Raphael Varane on a free transfer, while his minutes need replacing with genuine quality.
Several names have been linked with filling the void, though the prominent player right now is Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch centre-half, who is currently dealing with an uncertain future at Bayern Munich, could be an astute piece of business at the right price.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on that front, confirming that United are ‘increasingly confident’ about getting a deal done to sign the defender.
The player has been ‘clear’ with his agent about what he wants ‘giving priority’ to the Reds at this stage.
Personal terms are almost in place, while talks about the structure of the deal remain ongoing.

As things stand, it does look like United have a brilliant chance at getting this deal done. De Ligt genuinely seems to like the idea of a transfer to Old Trafford, while a reunion with Erik ten Hag feels like a smart decision for his career.
Around £40m should be enough to seal the signing, which is a fair valuation given the current situation. I do worry about De Ligt’s injury history, though if the worst is behind him, this could be a masterstroke.
In terms of stylistic fit, De Ligt feels like the ideal partner for Lisandro Martinez in the long-term. He’ll also bring that winning mentality to a dressing room that could do with more of that.
