Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sven Ulreich has been around long enough to know that it is not wise to get too worked up over the transfer rumors and other happenings that occur during the summer months.
“The summer break is always a time when a lot happens and there are a lot changes. Let’s see what happens in the next few weeks and months. Probably not so much for us in terms of goalkeepers,” Ulreich told Abendzeitung (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Aside of keeping his focus on what he can control, Ulreich is also keenly watching the EUROs — and his pal, Manuel Neuer. Ulreich thinks talk of the decline of Neuer is a bit premature.
“I’ve said to friends and family: ‘I can’t understand why there are discussions over him in Germany.’ – We’re still seeing the greatest goalkeeper of all time – that’s the best thing. In other countries, there would be no discussion if he made a mistake. Manu has taken goalkeeping to a different level worldwide. That’s why these discussions are incomprehensible to me. Manu is playing an excellent tournament, he also made world-class saves against Hungary, then that shot from Xhaka – he does everything well and we have to honor that. We can be happy that we have a goalkeeper like him in goal,” Ulreich said. “Manu knows how to deal with (criticism). But of course it annoys you, especially when you have done and achieved as much as he has, then you still have to justify something like that.”
Ulreich is expected to be in a competition with Daniel Peretz for the No. 2 role on the squad behind Neuer when training camp begins in July.
