Man United are edging closer to completing the signing of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.
It always felt like Manchester United were in the market to sign a new striker this summer. It just makes sense, given the fact that Anthony Martial is no longer here. His minutes need replacing.
There’s nobody in the academy banging down the door for minutes in the striker role, with Joe Hugill probably the best of the bunch. It feels a year or two too soon for the young Englishman.
The name most linked with filling the void left by the Frenchman above is Joshua Zirkzee. The Bologna striker has a release clause around the £34m mark.
Now, the usually reliable Gianluca Di Marzio has provided an update on the Reds’ pursuit of Zirkzee.
According to his information, United have ‘formally informed’ Bologna that they’re going to pay the release clause to secure the signing of Zirkzee this summer.

Zirkzee scored twelve goals across all competitions last term, helping Bologna to a fifth place finish in Serie A. He was also named Young Player of the Year in the Italian top flight.
The striker is currently preparing for a game against England in the European Championship semi-final, so I’d imagine we will not hear anything concrete until the international tournament is over for the Dutch.
The verdict
I have to admit, I am quite excited about this one. Bringing in a new goal-getter always whets the appetite, while Zirkzee can help United play a different way, which could be key given they were very one-dimensional last term.
Let’s hope the deal is wrapped up quickly, so United and INEOS can focus their attention on acquiring other transfer targets.
