Per a release from FCBayern.com, Bayern Munich star Leroy Sané underwent surgery earlier today, which will keep him out of action until the end of the month:
Following Germany’s elimination from Euro 2024, Leroy Sané underwent minimally invasive surgery on his groin in Munich on Monday. The Bayern forward had been battling pain at the end of last season. The 28-year-old is now expected to join team training at the end of July with the rest of the players who competed at the EUROs.
Earlier today, Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) revealed that Sané was about to undergo surgery, but also added context on exactly how long the player has been dealing with the issue:
Leroy Sané will undergo a minor surgery on his groin in Munich today. The player wants to get fit in 3-4 weeks and take part in pre-season under Vincent Kompany. The expectation is for him to be ready to resume training alongside the rest of the international players on July 29. After the severe pain that lasted for weeks, Sané had no alternative but to have an operation.
Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau confirmed the surgery (via @MiaSanMia), but was more conservative about Sané’s ability to be ready by the start of training camp later this month:
Leroy Sané underwent successful groin surgery this morning in Munich. Sané will now have to take a break for around three weeks and wants to slowly start training again at the end of July.
This all begs the question, why was Sané playing for Germany this summer when he clearly was not operating at 100%? Sané, who sat out early training sessions due to injury for Germany, was battling injuries and fatigue since last December, yet pushed through the second half of the season with Bayern Munich and the EURO 2024 tournament for Germany.
To play Sané in a knockout game vs. Spain (and Denmark as well) is extremely questionable by Julian Nagelsmann, especially when there were other quality options available.
