Things didn’t go well at all for Albian Ajeti when he joined West Ham from FC Basel five years ago.
West Ham paid £8 million to bring Albian Ajeti to the London Stadium back in the summer of 2019, before selling him on to Celtic for a £3 million loss a year later.
He failed to register a goal or an assist in the 12 games that he played for West Ham during his time at the London Stadium!
David Moyes famously didn’t even know who the 27-year-old was when he took over as the new Hammers boss back in December 2019.
It came as no surprise to anyone when Ajeti failed to make any kind of impact in a West Ham shirt, and his time at the London Stadium came to an abrupt end only 12 months after he joined us.
The Swiss forward has hardly set the world alight since he left the Hammers, and there’s a genuine argument to be made that the move to the London Stadium damaged him as a player.
Albian Ajeti makes astonishing West Ham admission
The former Hammer has endured a really tough last five years. Perhaps he wasn’t ready to move to the Premier League when he did, and that had had a huge impact on his recent struggles.
Ajeti sat down for an interview with Swiss newspaper Blick (print edition July 9th, page 14), and discussed his time at West Ham.
The striker responded when asked if he feels like he made a mistake by joining the Hammers, “No. I would make the change again.”
That’s fair enough from Ajeti but personally, I think joining the Hammers was a huge mistake.
Perhaps it was more of an error from West Ham – the fact we paid £8 million for someone totally unproven was mind-boggling in the first place.
Ajeti is right up there with the worst players we’ve ever signed in my opinion and trust me, there are a lot of names on that list!
He has since struggled during spells with Celtic, Sturm Graz and Gazisehir, and he’s now back where it all began at FC Basel.
Albian Ajeti and West Ham were never a match made in heaven, and that’s why his suggestion that he’d make the same decision to join us all over again is such an astonishing one.
