Bayern Munich is currently in the midst of a mini squad overhaul as the club looks to take shape under Vincent Kompany and his coaching staff, dawning the start of a new era. They have already made the signings of both Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart and Michael Olise from Crystal Palace with a few more transfer expected right around the corner. On the other end of the spectrum, key players could be leaving this summer. Joshua Kimmich, Kingsley Coman, Alphonso Davies, Leon Goretzka, and Serge Gnabry have all been linked with potential moves away from Munich this summer.
Partly due to the majority of Bayern’s players having been away at the Euros, most of the rumors are only speculative and nothing more concrete than that. However, for the case of Gnabry, Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg (via @iMiaSanMia) has reported that the attacker is leaning towards staying at Bayern this summer. He is not currently speaking with any outside club about a transfer away from Munich during this transfer window and he is more than happy to stay and try to establish himself as a key player in the squad under Kompany.
Gnabry’s current contract at Bayern runs through June 2026, having signed his last extension back in the summer of 2022. His market value has been on a downward trend ever since the beginning of the 2022/23 season and he is currently valuated at around 40 million euro via transfermarkt. This is the lowest his market value has been since 2018 has Gnabry has had a very unfortunate run of luck with injuries season after season at Bayern.
Last season under Thomas Tuchel, Gnabry only made a total of 20 appearances across all competitions, tallying 5 goals and 2 assists. He struggled with muscular injuries most of the season and was underperforming to a point that was cause for concern for Bayern’s supervisory board and front office. Comparatively, in the 2022/23 season, Gnabry featured 47 times across all competitions, scoring 17 times and providing 12 assists. In that season, Bayern’s board was really enthused and convinced of his future from all of the key goals he scored in the Bundesliga towards the end of the season.
Hopefully for Bayern and Kompany, Gnabry will be able to get back to as close to his peak form as possible. If that is the case, he will increase his market value while also helping Bayern get results; a win/win situation from Bayern’s standpoint.
