West Ham United could be given a big Jonathan David problem by Newcastle United this summer.
Jonathan David is a man in high demand this summer, with West Ham and Newcastle both thought to be chasing his signature.
Julen Lopetegui is desperately trying to bring a new striker to the London Stadium, and is said to be prioritising a move for Aston Villa ace Jhon Duran.
However, Canadian hitman David is someone who’s firmly on the Hammers radar as well. In fact, we’ve been linked with a move to sign him since 2021.
The 24-year-old is an elite striker – someone who’s more than ready to make the jump up from Ligue 1 to the Premier League.
But which club will David be plying his trade at next season?
I’m desperately hoping it’s West Ham, but Newcastle could be about to cause a really big problem for us…
Newcastle to give West Ham a Jonathan David nightmare
According to a report from Give Me Sport, the Toon have made a formal enquiry for the super talented Lille front-man.
The Hammers are set to open talks to sign David imminently, so Newcastle United’s alleged interest in the Canadian will be a big problem for us.
In fact, it could mean that West Ham now face an impossible task as we attempt to bring the fleet-footed 24-year-old to the London Stadium.
The Magpies have far superior spending power to the Hammers, and now the June 30th PSR deadline has passed, they should have more wriggle room in the transfer market.
Even the most ardent of West Ham fans will surely accept that Newcastle have more of a chance of pushing for the top four than we do.
And Jonathan David may well be more attracted to the idea of joining Newcastle than West Ham this summer.
David possesses absolutely frightening speed, and has exceptional movement. He always stretches the opposition’s defence by making tireless runs into the channels as well.
The Canadian hitman bagged a really impressive 26 goals and nine assists in 47 games in all competitions for Lille last season.
He also has 27 goals in 52 international games for Canada to his name.
Jonathan David would take West Ham to a new level entirely, but Newcastle entering the race for the Lille striker will make Lopetegui’s task of bringing him to the London Stadium an incredibly hard one…if not impossible.
