According to a report from Sport Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), it has become increasingly unlikely that Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka will become a part of the German national team under Julian Nagelsmann.
Instead, players like Bayern Munich’s Aleksandar Pavlović, VfB Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller, and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Pascal Groß could get a bigger opportunity in the central midfield. One player who also will likely not be back in the midfield is Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, who will remain as the team’s right-back:
Leon Goretzka is unlikely to be called up by Julian Nagelsmann even after Toni Kroos’ retirement. Nagelsmann wants to continue with the same style of play and is looking to replace Kroos with a similar type of midfielder. The coaching staff see Aleksandar Pavlović, Angelo Stiller and Pascal Groß as suitable candidates. Kimmich is to stay at right-back.
More than on-field performance, there were rumors that Goretzka has built a reputation as a malcontent if he does not start. While we have not heard anything concrete on that topic, it was a persistent story when Nagelsmann announced his EURO 2024 roster last month.
