Leroy Sané was Bayern Munich’s shiny new toy back in 2020 after completing an arduous period of negotiations with Manchester City. The early signs of what was to come were promising, but that soon proved to be a mirage as the faults that saw him fall out of favor with Pep Guardiola reared its ugly head. The recurring theme of Sané exceeding expectations in the first half of the season only to disappear in the second half has happened far too long for it to be a coincidence. With his future at the club at a crossroads, it’s time for the club to decide if this is the chance to part ways.
Obviously, I’ve also hoped that things would go differently with Sané and that he would prove the haters/skeptics wrong (me included). But he has worn out our patience because even a proven coach like Thomas Tuchel could not get him to play consistently for a whole season. That explains the skepticism that I have, along with others, at Sané getting a new deal. The thing is, I don’t see any reason why we should keep him even with guys like Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman leaving. Sané is definitely not indispensable, and Bayern have players that are more than capable of playing at the wings, or dare I say perform better than the three senior wingers even on their best.
I could be rambling here for an hour or longer, but I should get back to the point of this piece and say my stance on Sané and that it is probably best if he and the club embark on different paths this summer. That said, I am an advocate of giving players another chance to prove themselves so let’s operate under the assumption that Sané does extend. If that’s what the club wants, no problem there. But there should be a compromise because the club can’t pay someone that much and for the player to not justify it.
Sané should re-up with a lower salary that will increase based on his performance. If he meets a certain criterion that makes him eligible for a pay raise, then of course he should receive that extra pay. It works both ways because the club saves money on wages and gives Sané yet another chance to show that he can in fact provide consistency to his performances. However, if he still can’t do it this season then he must go.
What do you think? Is this a viable condition for the struggling Sané? Or has he been given one chance too many? Let us know in the comments!
