The EURO 2024, hosted by Germany, went out with a bang on Sunday as Spain defeated England, 2-1. All ten of Bayern Munich’s participants reached the knockout stage and a pair of them split the six-way crown for the Golden Boot (c’mon, UEFA!).
Most of Bayern’s players will go on vacation for some much needed rest. When the rest of the squad returns from the Korea preseason tour, all hands will be on deck at Säbener Strasse as Vincent Kompany prepares Bayern for the DFB-Pokal matchup at Ulm on August 16th.
How did each Bayern player perform at EURO 2024?
Harry Kane, England
England’s dramatic EURO 2024 run ended in a 2-1 loss in the cup final against Spain. Kane started every match of the tournament and his three goals earned him a piece of the Golden Boot. His elusive quest for a professional trophy will roll forward for another season.
Joshua Kimmich, Germany
Kimmich was arguably Germany’s most impressive player, playing every minute at right back for Die Mannschaft. He added two assists, including that 89th minute header to Florian Wirtz. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as Spain knocked out Germany in the final minute of the quarterfinal.
Jamal Musiala, Germany
The young attacker showed his incredible skill in his five starts. Like Kane, he scored three goals to claim a share of the Golden Boot. If Germany had been luckier and advanced past Spain, it’s likely that Musiala would’ve hoisted the honor alone.
Manuel Neuer, Germany
In his first action with the national team since the 2022 World Cup, Neuer performed admirably. He posted two clean sheets and had 11 saves. His future with the national team is up the air, but Bayern and Germany fans (except maybe Marc-André ter Stegen) hope to see Neuer at the 2026 World Cup.
Dayot Upamecano, France
Upamecano was in excellent form as he played every minute for Les Bleus. France only allowed three goals in six matches, and Upamecano was a major part of that defensive success.
Konrad Laimer, Austria
Laimer was a force for Austria’s midfield as they surprisingly claimed first place in Group D over France, Netherlands, and Poland. The fairy tale run ended in the Round of 16 at the hands of another surprise team, Türkiye.
Leroy Sané, Germany
Despite his poor form during the Rückrunde, Sané appeared in all five matches for Germany. He was clearly hampered by his nagging groin injury, and immediately had surgery after the tournament.
Thomas Müller, Germany
Müller hadn’t played a full 90 minutes for Germany since a friendly in March 2022, and EURO 2024 was no different as he only earned 58 minutes in two matches. Müller announced his retirement from the national team immediately after the tournament, but will look to earn one more trophy in his swan song with Bayern.
Kingsley Coman, France
On a loaded French squad, Coman only received 16 minutes and 11 touches. The oft-injured winger will need to improve his consistency if he wants a shot on the World Cup squad.
Matthijs de Ligt, Netherlands
The 24-year old Dutchman watched the entire tournament from the bench behind Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij. Instead, De Ligt spent more time reading the tabloids that publicized his impending transfer situation.
Bonus: Alphonso Davies, Canada (Copa America)
While sporting the captain’s armband at the age of 23, Davies played mostly at left-back at the Copa America. Even though they only won one match during regulation, Canada lost the third-place match in a penalty shootout. Davies exited the tournament with an ankle injury, but x-ray results came back favorably.
