New Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany’s appointment has come as a shock — but not to those who have followed closely.
Kompany’s father Pierre spoke about his son’s ascension to one of the top jobs in world football — and revealed which other clubs have scoped Vincent in the past, as well as why Bayern made sense at this stage of his career.
“It was a surprise to the whole world. Well, not for me. If you look at which teams have already come knocking: last year there were Tottenham and Chelsea, now Brighton showed interest, and Chelsea again,” said the elder Kompany (from DH les Sports +, as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “But when Bayern, a club that is so well structured at all levels, comes knocking, you don’t refuse.
“He worked at clubs where the pressure was high, but which were less well structured. At the time, he often had to do it with young players, whereas here, he has a lot of resources and players to create something great.
“Elsewhere, as a coaching candidate, you talk to the club’s financial manager. At Bayern, you talk to former players. They know what they want and it’s up to you to convince them of your vision. Vincent managed to do that. At Bayern they did not focus blindly on the relegation. They know Burnley should have got more points. They thought it was good that Vincent does not change his vision when he falls behind.”
These comments may also reveal what Bayern fans can expect: a young coach who believes in his vision and will stick with it through adversity. That may be just what the Rekordmeister needs after recent years of turmoil.
