Representing one’s country is usually incredibly special and the opportunity to do so at the Olympics comes around very rarely. That is why new Bayern Munich signing Michael Olise has chosen to take part in the tournament for France instead of pre season preparations with his new club.
And that is also the reason why Bayern keeper Daniel Peretz was off to participate in the Olympics as well. It was Israel he was going to represent, who are facing in-numerous calls to be banned from the tournament due to the atrocities currently committed in Palestine. But Peretz may not have to worry about the possible moral dilemmas of representing Israel in the short term, as his decision has been made for him. Bayern Munich announced via their official website that:
Daniel Peretz is sidelined for several weeks and will no longer take part in the Olympic Games in Paris with the Israeli team. The 24-year-old suffered a muscle tendon injury in his thigh and is already back in Munich.”
The Olympics would have been a chance for the oft benched goalkeeper to get some valuable playing time and experience under his belt as he looks to eventually challenge for Bayern’s No. 1 jersey…but perhaps there is an upside to all this.
