It is no secret right now that Bayern Munich very much wants to sign Xavi Simons from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. The Dutch attacker has made it abundantly clear that he does not want to stay at PSG and Bayern is reportedly his preferred destination, though there is also a possibility that Marco Rose and company could convince the player to do another loan spell with RB Leipzig, just as he had done last season.
Now that the EUROs are over and Simons is done with playing for the Netherlands until the next international break, he will have to make a decision on his future. There was speculation that a deal with Bayern was imminent when the player himself took to social media to post what looked to be a playing card resembling that of the reverse card in the Uno card game. However, it has been explained that the post had nothing to do with a potential transfer being imminent. Regardless, Bayern wants him and the Rekordmeister is one of his preferred destinations, so it is really only fine details and negotiations that stand in the way of the Dutchman coming to Munich.
On an appearance for Welt Am Sonntag (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl recalled bringing Simons to RB Leipzig back when he was the director of sport for Die Roten Bullen. He played a key role in getting the player to go on loan at Leipzig from PSG not long before he was sacked by Leipzig, as the club had become well aware of the fact that he was readying to accept a job offer at Bayern.
“I brought him to Leipzig. We saw in the Bundesliga and at the Euros that he is an outstanding footballer,” Eberl explained when he was asked about Simons. Eberl was subsequently asked whether or not Bayern is currently doing everything in their power to bring the attacker to Munich this summer, to which he replied, “we are trying everything to have a top squad for the new season.”
Reading between the lines seems to suggest Eberl was just saying ‘yes’ in an expectedly diplomatic fashion as Bayern continues to navigate a window in which they have already signed Hiroki Ito from VfB Stuttgart, Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, and João Palhinha from Fulham FC.
