There have been many debates surrounding Leon Goretzka’s fate at Bayern Munich, ones truly sparked to life following accusations of poor form and former head coach Thomas Tuchel’s questions about his fit in his tactical system.
Despite Tuchel’s departure, the debate rages on as reports that new director of sport Max Eberl has put Leon Goretzka on the transfer list. In true Uli Hoeneß fashion, however, the Bavarians’ former president has made his opinion on Bayern’s No. 8 crystal clear, speaking to two different reporters about the situation.
First, Hoeneß explained to Heiko Niedderer that a Goretzka in top form has a place in Munich, as captured by @iMiaSanMia: “At Bayern, there’s no situation where you say he won’t get another chance. A new era begins tomorrow in the training camp. And if Leon is in top form, it doesn’t mean he can’t play for us.”
However, speaking to Georg Holzner, he also opined that Bayern has not seen Goretzka in top form for a while now, as captured by @iMiaSanMia again: “In life you always get a second chance. That also applies to him at Bayern. He now has the chance to prove himself. The last two years have not been good.”
It seem that Bayern’s former president and current member of the supervisory board and the new sporting direction are at odds about how to handle the former Schalke player’s future. And when it comes to a power struggle in Munich, it makes little sense to bet against Hoeneß.
