On Tuesday afternoon, UAE side Al Jazira confirmed the signing of Mohamed Elneny.
After eight years at Arsenal, was one of a few senior players released by the club this summer. As such, he was available for a free transfer.
The move made sense, with Elneny playing an increasingly limited role under Mikel Arteta, largely watching on from the sidelines for his final year at the Emirates Stadium.
Elneny made just six appearances for Arsenal in 2023/24, including just one start, for a total of 96 minutes. He even dropped out of the Egypt national team, having previously been a regular whether Arsenal were starting him or not.
Though Elneny was popular with the fans and with the squad behind the scenes, it was clear he needed to move on to have a more regular impact on the pitch.
Al Jazira compete in the UAE Pro League, finishing mid-table in eighth in 2023/24. Elneny could end up playing for them alongside Karim Rekik, the older brother of Arsenal defender Omar, who moved to Al Jazira in 2023.
The 32-year-old will hope his new club helps him to return to the Egypt setup in the coming months.
