Bayern Munich’s signing of Jonah Kusi-Asare was eye-catching, not least because the €4.5 million transfer fee represented a more significant fee than Bayern are usually willing to part with for a youth player. But the young Swede was impressive in his limited appearances, totalling three goals and one assist in six matches before he suffered an ankle injury in April. It is that injury he is still battling with, but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel, as Kerry Hau reports:
Bayern talent Jonah Kusi-Asare (17), who came from Sweden in January for €4.5 million and had an ankle operation in April, is working hard on his comeback. The centre-forward is back in running training and used the previous break to build up his upper body strength. If everything goes according to plan, he should return to team training in three weeks – initially with the U-19 and U-23 teams. [Bayern sporting director] Christoph Freund, who convinced him to move to Munich, keeps in close contact with him and speaks to him regularly. Kusi-Asare wants to go all out in the new season and win the attention of [Bayern head coach] Vincent Kompany.
The 17-year-old is seen as an elite talent and it is unfortunate that he was forced to miss pre-season and the most direct chance he will have to impress Kompany. Still, the fact that he is finally recovering from his devastating injury will be seen as good news by all.
