Julian Nagelsmann raised a lot of eyebrows when he called up more players to the German national squad than were allowed to participate, but even more so because Serge Gnabry was not one of the players called up.
Bayern Munich’s number 7 has not had the most stellar season, he was cursed with injury, but not that bad of a performer, all things considered. Gnabry was recently asked whether he sees himself in the future of Germany’s football scene. The interview, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, went something like this:
Do you actually assume that you will continue to be part of Julian Nagelsmann’s squad?
Gnabry: “You’re asking the wrong person” [laughs]
Yes, but you should be aware of the coach’s plans. You have known him for a long time.
Gnabry: “I at least had the feeling that I would have been in the Euros squad without the injury. But as far as the future is concerned, the rule is: if you perform well, you’ll be there.”
Bayern’s winger could not have given us a more vague answer, and has basically left us to consider pretty much everything that is possible.
The one thing we can tell, though, is that he was disappointed to not be there for the Euros. Understandably, of course. If not for his injuries, perhaps Gnabry would have achieved more than a spot on Germany’s squad.
