There has been a cloud of uncertainty over Joshua Kimmich’s future at Bayern Munich. Following Bayern’s 2-1 preseason victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Seoul, it seems the forecast for the 29-year-old’s future is cloudy with a chance of more uncertainty.
Kimmich addressed the media about potential contract talks following his first start under new head coach, Vincent Kompany.
Unsurprisingly, the German international played coy on his future at Bayern (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Kimmich’s response doesn’t exactly fill Bayern fans with confidence over a contract extension, however, he was quick to settle any panic that one of the aforementioned “doors” would be an exit door.
“You can always talk to each other reasonably, all doors are open to everyone,” said Kimmich. “Generally speaking, I feel really comfortable here. All my kids were born here, we built a house. Of course, last season wasn’t so successful, that’s not what Bayern and I want. Now I’m hungry, full of energy.”
Generally speaking, no one quite knows where Kimmich’s head is at in this moment of time, but more than ever, it feels as if the two time German player of the year is inching towards an exit.
On the contrary, one positive takeaway from Bayern’s starting line-up against Spurs was Kompany’s decision to start Kimmich in the midfield, with Sacha Boey being preferred in right-back. Despite being an exceptional right-back, it’s no secret that Kimmich sees his future in the midfield, a point of contention with former head coach, Thomas Tuchel. Vincent Kompany, however, seems to share Kimmich’s positional perspective. It certainly is not enough to guarantee his future at Bayern, but at the very least it is a good start.
