After two friendlies against lower tier opposition that drew criticism, Bayern Munich’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur was set to be the biggest test of the bunch. It is a test that Bayern passed well, demonstrating style and a clear plan as the team came away with a good 2-1 victory.
Head coach Vincent Kompany acknowledged this success, as captured by Bayern’s official website, and was eager to highlight the positives without letting himself get carried away: “It was a game of two halves. We made a lot of substitutions and the boys created a lot of chances – that was a sign of strong mentality. The focus is on quickly regaining our fitness level, which is also why some players found themselves in [un]usual positions at times. It was good to see how often all 11 players tracked back together to stop Tottenham scoring. That wasn’t always the case, though, so we have to work on that. We also had a good tempo and high pressing up front, which is how we created a lot of chances. That pleased me a lot today.”
Now the name of the game is to keep the effort up. Next up is…yet another friendly against Tottenham, a rather rare event of Bayern playing the same opponent back to back in pre season preparations. Kompany and his team will be eager to prove that this game was not just a one off but the sign of great things to come.
