Speaking to the RTL talkshow, Louis van Gaal addressed about a number of topics, including his battle against cancer that forced him to step down as Netherlands coach after the 2022 World Cup, how Netherlands were ‘robbed’ against Argentina and…erm… even joking about his inability to make love. And yet, one of the most headline grabbing quotes pertain to Bayern Munich, as the 72-year-old Dutchman claims the club had approached him for the position of head coach before Vincent Kompany was eventually signed.
Naturally, such news travels quickly and, naturally, Bayern’s Director of Sport Max Eberl was soon asked about van Gaal’s claim. As captured by Kerry Hau, Eberl had a pretty simple and straightforward answer: “Well, I did not talk to him.”
So what is the truth here? Did van Gaal lie? Did Eberl lie? Is Eberl trying to cover up the fact that Kompany was actually Bayern’s 25th choice for manager? Did someone on the Bayern board butt dial van Gaal? Did Uli Hoeneß speak to him to bring back the ballsy glory of the old days? We may never know.
