According to a report from Tz journalists Philipp Kessler and Mano Bonke (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany counts versatile midfielder / right-back Joshua Kimmich among his most important players for this season:
Contrary to other reports, Vincent Kompany is relying on Joshua Kimmich and is well aware that the latter can play three positions at a top level: as a #6, #8 – and if necessary or if the tactics against a certain opponent require it, also as a right-back. There’s currently no such player in the squad. During the Korea tour, it became clear that Kompany sees Kimmich as best in central midfield, where he could play alongside João Palhinha in the important games.
Kimmich’s versatility will be an asset for Kompany, who is planning to rotate more than Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann. By doing this, Kompany is attempting to build a culture that is focused on the greater group, rather than individuals:
In general, however, Kompany is planning to rotate the squad due to the big number of games this season. The coach is putting the focus on the “we”, the team spirit. Coaching team, staff and players are seen as a unit, and individuals should not be highlighted.
Finally, the rumors about Kimmich being willing to take a pay cut just to stay at Bayern Munich could be overstated:
Initial informal talks with Kimmich over a contract extension have taken place. However, it’s highly doubtful whether the 29-year-old, who is in his prime as a footballer, would accept a significant pay cut. After all, he’s been a regular starter for years – and will likely continue to start under Vincent Kompany.
Manchester City, Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain are said to be among the clubs interested in Kimmich.
