The Association of German Sports Journalists (Verband Deutscher Sportjournalisten) recently announced Germany’s best players and coaches. Players included those active in Germany, and German nationals too. Coaches, on the other hand, were limited to German coaches only.
The positions were decided by votes from the journalists, and was captured by @iMiaSanMia.
Toni Kroos, who had an incredible run at the Euros with Germany, and a great season with Real Madrid, was voted Germany’s footballer of the year. Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane, Thomas Müller, and Joshua Kimmich of Bayern Munich also made the list, coming in 4th, 5th, 8th, and 13th place respectively. Bayern, along with Bayer Leverkusen had the most number of players on the list, both at four each.
Xabi Alonso, after his stellar and near-perfect season with Leverkusen, was voted Germany’s coach of the year. The former Bayern Munich player won by a landslide, with him having over 400 votes over second place (Sebastian Hoeneß). As expected, Thomas Tuchel had no votes, and was not included in the final list, owing to his…questionable season at Sabener Strasse. Julian Nagelsmann placed 4th in the list for his performance as Germany’s national team coach. Reaching the quarter finals with the squad after a long streak of sad tournament exits was enough to earn him quite a few votes.
