Speaking to Bild, as captured by @iMiaSanMia here and here, Bayern Munich’s Director of Sport Max Eberl talked about certain topics in depth to help clarify them as the start of Bayern’s seasons draws near. Among these topics were the role of Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Müller, two long serving players who nevertheless face uncertain futures in part due expiring contracts and changes in the team’s structure. Müller was firmly relegated to a less important role last season while Kimmich was pushed to the position of right back, leading to questions as to how the two would be deployed this upcoming season. And Eberl gave pretty clear indications of those roles with his words.
He had this to say on Kimmich: “You always plan things in advance. It was clear to us that Josh would end up in midfield again. We thought about it.”
After confirming the former VFB Stuttgart player’s return to midfield, Eberl then had this to say on Müller: “Thomas is not a bad player, he’s perhaps a bit older. But with age, the quality can also be good and we know that with Thomas. Vincent has put a lot of thought into what suits this squad and the players. He has found a good mix. It suits players who are so smart.”
Two long serving players, both still very much needed in Bayern’s quest to reach the Finale Dahoam in the Champions League next season and reclaim the Bundesliga crown. Can the two adapt to their new roles and help Bayern achieve glory? Or will the change prove to be too much?
