According to a report from Sky Sport journalists Florian Plettenberg and Kerry Hau (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Manuel Neuer’s retirement from the German national team could open the door for him to have a longer stay with Bayern Munich:
Following his international retirement, Manuel Neuer is now fully focused on FC Bayern and can well imagine staying at the club beyond 2025. Bayern are also optimistic Neuer would extend his contract once again, but at the moment there are no talks taking place. A decision is expected by next year. For Neuer, the decision depends mainly on his fitness.
What does this mean for Bayern Munich? Well, things could get interesting.
Alexander Nübel recently inked a new deal through 2029 and will be on loan through 2026 with VfB Stuttgart. The anointed “Next One” will likely be content to stay with Die Schwaben through the end of his loan, but if Neuer is gearing up to take a run at the 2026/27 season (he turns 41 during that season!), Bayern Munich would have to get very creative in finding a way to keep Nübel. By then, the younger goalkeeper could be at wit’s end.
Regardless, Bayern Munich has a pathway forward in between the sticks.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 4, Episode 6
Well, we made it.
Through the EURO 2024 tourney, a crazy transfer window (which is still ongoing for a few more days), the preseason, and the opening DFB-Pokal match, Bayern Munich is finally ready to kick off its Bundesliga season.
Excitement does, indeed, reign supreme.
If you want our takes on the Bayern Munich vs. Wolfsburg match, check out our Preview Show, but for now, we have a lot of other Bayern news to tackle on our agenda. Let’s take a look at what is on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show:
- After all of that, Leon Goretzka and Kingsley Coman are probably staying at Bayern Munich…now, what?
- More thoughts on that wild Matthijs de Ligt story.
- Germany lost a ton of experience in the last two months after the respective retirements of Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, İlkay Gündoğan, and Manuel Neuer.
- Would Manuel Neuer have stayed with Germany under another coach?
- The four most “captain-like” players all retired, so Joshua Kimmich has to be the choice…right?
- Who else could be in contention?
Song of the Week: “Seek and Destroy” by Metallica
Some days you don’t wake up and choose Metallica, sometimes you wake up and they choose you.
We are going all the way back to 1983 for this lost classic (at least to the young crowd), which appeared on the legendary “Kill ‘Em All” album. Enjoy this trip back to the burgeoning days of heavy metal:
Entertainment Rundown
While I am on brief hiatus from watching shows, I did want to drop this for anyone who was a fan of The Sopranos. HBO is putting out a documentary on the show and its creator, David Chase. Hopefully, it will be better than that dreadful prequel that was produced:
Game of Thrones
Just a quick note, I noted that I am doing a rewatch of Game of Thrones to help explore why I loved most of it, why I hated the ending, and why I think the magic has not translated over to House of the Dragon.
I’ll make something out of it for this section of the WWU.
Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show: Wolfsburg vs. Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich will kick off its Bundesliga season on Sunday vs. VfL Wolfsburg in a match that will tell us a lot about what Vincent Kompany has in its plans for the squad this season.
For the most part, Bayern Munich is healthy and seems poised to make a strong run at winning the Meisterschale. There is a lot of time between now and when that would happen, though, so fans are going to have endure through the ups-and-downs of the season.
Let’s take a look at what we have on tap for the match that will start another journey:
- What to watch for with Wolfsburg.
- A look at Bayern Munich’s injury situation.
- A guess at Bayern Munich’s starting XI.
- A prediction on the match.
Predictions
Bayern Munich has a talent and depth advantage over a Wolfsburg squad still trying to figure out exactly who it is.
On paper, this should be a blow out, but the Wolves are operating under Ralph Hasenhüttl, who will — no doubt — devise a plan to try to slow down the creative attack that Vincent Kompany has overseen this summer.
Kompany’s role in the match will be to pick the right XI to get the job done, which will not always be easy. The bossman has plenty of worthy options.
As for how this plays out, look for Bayern Munich to never seriously be threatened in a match they will control all the way. Because the backline has some questions, they will be due to let one slip for a Wolves goal, but otherwise, this is a great chance for Bayern Munich to start the season with a win.
Prediction: VFL Wolfsburg 1-3 Bayern Munich
