West Ham‘s pursuit of John Egan is someone who is dividing opinion amongst Hammers fans as can be seen in the comments section since he was announced. The experienced defender offers a cost-effective option for the club but it does have the look of a ‘just make do’ signing.
John Egan is a proven defender with experience in the lower leagues and at the international level. He clearly has his abilities but at 31 and coming off an injury, is he really a better back-up option than Kurt Zouma?
Signing Egan as a free transfer would be a financially sound decision for West Ham. The club would avoid paying a transfer fee and he is apparently asking for a relatively modest £30k per week. The truth is that Egan’s wages would probably be far lower than the reported amount.
Of the three free agents we were looking at Egan is arguably the least exciting option, especially coming off a season he missed nearly all of with injury as the Blades were relegated from the Premier League.
However, I do wonder if West Ham are spending money they don’t really need to just so a Lopetegui technically has four central defenders.
