West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui completed a huge squad overhaul in the summer transfer window.
Julen Lopetegui brought nine new players to West Ham in the summer, whilst 12 left the London Stadium on a mix of loan deals, for small fees and on free transfers.
After the West Ham head coach‘s summer business, the Hammers are undoubtedly a stronger side now than when the window opened.
However, as good as the transfer window was for the Hammers, there are still a couple of areas of Lopetegui’s squad that require further atttention.
I would have liked to see us sign a young striker and a rapid left-back in the summer.
Many West Ham fans agree, and that is the reason why one of Lopetegui’s summer signings has drawn so much criticism so far.
West Ham signing Luis Guilherme explained
Many Hammers fans have been questioning the wisdom behind shelling out so much money on Luis Guilherme, when we were crying out for an explosive young striker and a pacy left-back.
West Ham paid around £25.5 million to secure the signing of Luis Guilherme in the summer transfer window.
It was one of the biggest surprise transfers of the summer for the Hammers.
However, I think it’s so obvious why Lopetegui wanted the Brazilian at the London Stadium in the summer transfer window.
Let’s not forget that the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid wanted to sign Guilherme in the summer (Daily Mail).
West Ham did so well to win the race for the South American teenager, and Lopetegui clearly wanted to sign him now rather than wait another year when he could cost around £50 million, and quite frankly be unattainable.
The Hammers got in before Guilherme becomes a star, and that’s the kind of recruitment we can all get behind.
Talented teenager Guilherme has huge potential
In my opinion, the 18-year-old winger has the basic ingredients needed to go on and become a real star of the game.
Palmeiras vice president Paulo Buosi recently described Guilherme as an ‘extraordinary and sensational’ talent.
Guilherme is obviously a supremely talented young footballer, but he quite clearly has his head screwed on as well regarding the way he works and conducts himself.
From what he showed during his time with Palmeiras, he has every chance of making it at the very highest level, as long as he works hard – something that I don’t doubt he will do.
The teenager is a right winger, but he can actually play anywhere along the front-line, so he should provide Lopetegui with some real tactical flexibility over the next few years.
Luis Guilherme has all of the talent and potential in the world, and his skillset, impressive pace and wicked left foot will undoubtedly thrill the West Ham fans over the next few years.
