David Moyes had looked set to replace Sean Dyche at Everton but an ironic twist could see a former West Ham target take over instead.
It has been looking increasingly likely that David Moyes would return to Premier League management sooner than many thought following his West Ham exit amid links with former club Everton.
In the eyes of many Moyes was as good as it could ever get for West Ham. And Everton were used as an example of that in debates on the subject.
Julen Lopetegui is tasked with proving that isn’t the case for the Hammers.
Thus far Sean Dyche is the latest manager to prove that theory correct at Everton.
West Ham supporters who called for change in the summer posed the question that if Moyes was so highly thought of and coveted, then which clubs were waiting to snap him up when he left?
Moyes’ fellow Scot Graeme Souness actually took an interesting stance when he flipped the argument on its head in the summer, stating that perhaps West Ham will be as good as it gets for Moyes.
Moyes looked set for Everton return after Hammers exit
There have been links to the Wales and Scotland jobs and fleeting speculation he might join Leicester after Enzo Maresca’s exit.
A big return was looking more certain than ever for ex West Ham boss Moyes at Everton.
Pressure has been building on Dyche as the Toffees hit rock bottom.
Having managed to avoid relegation on several occasions in recent seasons, Everton sit bottom of the table after three games.
A 3-0 defeat at home to Brighton was followed by a 4-0 thumping at Spurs. Then, inexplicably, with Everton leading 2-0 in the 88th minute at home against Bournemouth, they somehow conspired to throw it away and lose 3-2.
Everton fans have been filmed making their feelings clear to players and many of them are turning on Dyche. Tensions are fraught at Goodison Park as Dyche responded to the backlash recently by saying it’s ‘the way the fans are at Everton’.
It has started to feel like the beginning of the end for Dyche at Everton with growing speculation Moyes is set to return to Merseyside.
But there’s no lack of irony as an ex West Ham target is lined up to be the new Everton boss instead of Moyes.
Ex West Ham target lined up for Everton instead of Moyes
When the Hammers were conducting their very public search for a manager to replace Moyes, one of the names on the shortlist was Palmeiras’ revolutionary Portuguese manager Abel Ferreira.
West Ham’s hierarchy actually approached Ferreira in January to lay the groundwork.
But in the end Ferreira told the Irons ‘no’.
The innovative former Sporting player and coach has won the league and Copa Libertadores twice each as well as several cups in Brazil.
Now Everton want to try and succeed where West Ham failed.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, Everton takeover bidder John Textor wants to bring in Ferreira if he wins control of the club.
Nixon reports that Textor has followed the manager’s work closely he owns Palmeiras’ Brazilian rivals Botafogo.
It is claimed Textor is set on Ferreira but could look to another former West Ham target, Paulo Fonseca, if he can’t be lured to Everton.
“Textor is dead set on landing Everton and that would put huge pressure on boss Sean Dyche who kept the club up under difficult circumstances last season but has got off to a poor start this time,” Nixon said on his Patreon page.
“Highly rated Paolo Fonseca, another Portuguese coach, is also fancied by Textor but would be difficult to attract from AC Milan.”
