An early Matthijs de Ligt injury update has been provided by Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United Football Club played their most convincing game of the season so far away on the South Coast yesterday, beating Southampton 3-0. The Red Devils started sluggishly, though they overcame the early onslaught and took complete control of proceedings.
It was Matthijs de Ligt who set the Red Devils on their way with a truly brilliant header from a set-piece, paving the way for a Man of the Match performance from the new signing.
The Dutchman is already forming a nice partnership back there with Lisandro Martinez, with the former Bayern Munich man already showing his class.
However, the nerves starting jangling when De Ligt had to be substituted off late on with an apparent injury.
Thankfully, those injury fears have since been eased by Ten Hag, who provided an encouraging update on the key star after the game. It appears De Ligt was dealing with cramp.
Check out what the gaffer had to say in full here:
“It looks like [cramp] yes,” Ten Hag said when asked about De Ligt, per ManUtd.com.
“We had internationals, short in the season, some are short in the pre-season, some come from intercontinental flights so then you know you have a 12.30 game and you can struggle,”
“Hopefully it’s nothing serious, we have to assess it today, or tomorrow and then we can see.”
The 24-year-old has had his own injury issues in the past so this is good news. There has been a quick turnaround for De Ligt, who played two games for the Netherlands then had to take part in the early kick-off on Saturday lunchtime.
With Harry Maguire looking like he was struggling at the end of the match, while Lisandro Martinez also went off injured, it’s vital that De Ligt can stay fit here as we’d already be down to the bare bones at the heart of defence.
Games are now coming thick and fast and United need their key players to stay as healthy as possible, so I’d be surprised if we see De Ligt involved against Barnsley in midweek…
