West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez has opened up on his surprise at one player Julen Lopetegui chose to sign in the summer.
Edson Alvarez joined West Ham from Ajax back in the summer of 2023 for around £34 million.
The 26-year-old quickly established himself as one of the Hammers’ most important players, and he serves as vital link between defence and attack.
Alvarez is crucial to the system that Julen Lopetegui is trying to deploy at West Ham, what with his ability to receive the ball in tight areas under pressure, and his coolness and composure in possession.
When the Mexico international was out injured with a hamstring problem, it was painfully obvious just how reliant we are on him.
Keeping him fit between now and the end of the season will be absolutely vital to our hopes of pushing for a European spot.
He’s not the only important player we have in the middle of the park though…
Edson Alvarez was surprised when West Ham signed one player
The Mexican is well settled at the London Stadium now.
And he has a new role of helping the new-boys settle in, well, one new signing in particular.
Guido Rodriguez joined the Hammers on a free transfer this summer.
The Hammers were universally praised for winning the race for the Argentina international’s signature.
And he has looked pretty solid for us so far, albeit a little bit off the pace.
Alvarez spoke to WHUFC.com and admitted that he was surprised to see his old friend Guido rock up at the London Stadium this summer.
“It was a really lovely surprise [to find out Guido was joining us],” he explained. “To begin with, there were no other Latinos on the team. And who better to join me than an old friend, right? I’m really happy to have him here.“
The duo played together at Club America in Mexico, and forged a great relationship with each other, both on and off the pitch.
Guido Rodriguez will be crucial for West Ham
The 30-year-old excels when breaking up the opposition’s play in the middle of the park.
When he is fully fit and up to speed with Premier League football, he’ll be a vital player for the Hammers.
Rodriguez will undoubtedly form a really solid double pivot with his old friend Edson Alvarez at West Ham.
He is a tenacious tackler who’s perfectly suited to Premier League football, what with the aggressive way that he goes about his business.
West Ham signing him on a free transfer will end up looking like an incredibly good deal.
I can’t wait to see Rodriguez and Alvarez flourish together at the London Stadium.
