West Ham United are in the midst of a new era with Julen Lopetegui at the helm, and Stuart Pearce has opened up on what he really thinks about our current situation.
Stuart Pearce was a first-team coach at West Ham during David Moyes’s tenure at the club, up until the summer of 2022 when he moved on.
Pearce was definitely in the ‘be careful what you wish for camp’ when Moyes was under big pressure last season, but he was made to look rather silly when the Scot led us to numerous heavy defeats during the second half of the campaign.
That said, the 62-year-old had a really big impact at the London Stadium, during his spell on the coaching staff, and he was a fairly popular figure at the club.
He was always a staunch supporter of David Moyes though, and that didn’t really do him any favours with some of the Hammers faithful in the end.
So what does Pearcey think of the current goings on in East London?
Stuart Pearce delivers verdict on West Ham under Julen Lopetegui
Lopetegui has made a slow start to life at the London Stadium.
West Ham have won just one game out of our first five Premier League outings, and the pressure is beginning to crank up on the Spaniard.
In my opinion, the future is still very bright for the Hammers. There are still plenty of positives for sure, including some of the summer signings we made, and the fact that we have a strong group who seem to be together right now.
And here’s what Pearce thinks about it all.
Stuart Pearce was a guest on talkSPORT on Tuesday September 24th, and at 9:38am, he delivered his honest verdict on West Ham under Julen Lopetegui.
He said, “I think some of the recruitment has been very good. That’s my opinion. But time will tell on that. When you look at West Ham’s team on paper, you have got Paqueta, Kudus, Jarrod, a real strike-force up there that can get goals. I think they are shipping too many cheap goals potentially, but I think in time there will be improvement, no doubt.”
I agree with Pearce here.
Future is bright at West Ham
West Ham have some terrific players at the London Stadium right now, and things will surely improve sooner rather than later.
Lopetegui needs time to implement all of his new ideas and his footballing philosophy at the London Stadium.
If he is granted plenty of patience from the fans and the board, he will succeed in charge of the Hammers, I have no doubts in my mind about that.
Stuart Pearce is clearly a fan of some of the players we have at West Ham, but he did highlight the need for us to tighten up defensively.
That will be the key for us this season. If Lopetegui can get his team defending strongly as a unit, we will be in very good shape.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Spaniard is actually able to do that.
