West Ham United were soundly beaten by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The 5-1 score-line may well have flattered Liverpool in the end, but don’t be fooled – West Ham just weren’t good enough as a unit in the Carabao Cup third round tie.

Aaron Cresswell started the game against Liverpool in place of Emerson Palmieri, and he was clearly upset with one of his teammates after the match.
Julen Lopetegui is now said to be under real pressure ahead of the Premier League game against Brentford on Saturday.
I really felt for the travelling fans who made their way to Anfield last night.
That’s now two 5-1 defeats away at Liverpool in the same competition in consecutive seasons.
And one player in particular really let down the travelling claret and blue army…
West Ham player criticises teammate after Carabao Cup Liverpool defeat
The Hammers left Merseyside with nothing to show for our efforts once again.
That’s nothing new – we’ve won only once up there since 1963! However, it was the manner of our capitulation inside the final 15 minutes that hurt so badly.
When speaking to WHUFC.com, Cresswell pointed out how Edson Alvarez didn’t help matters when he received his second yellow cards late on in the match.
Cresswell said, “When you’re away at Liverpool and go 1-0 up, and if Jean-Clair [Tobido’s] header goes in, then it’s a different game, but to concede straight away is disappointing. It’s an old cliché, but we’ve got to move on now and take the positives tonight. Sometimes the decisions [for penalties] go and sometimes they don’t. The sending off didn’t help, but we’ve got to move forward.“
Edson Alvarez let down his teammates, the fans and his manager with his brainless tackle on Mohamed Salah that led to him being sent off.
A tough night for West Ham at Liverpool
The Hammers were actually very competitive in the game right up to Alvarez’s sending off with around 15 minutes left to play.
Lopetegui has to get his team defending better as a unit though.
We’ve conceded 14 goals in seven games in all competitions this season, and that quite simply isn’t good enough.
Our backline was incredibly porous last season, and things don’t seem to haver gotten any better, despite the arrivals of Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Lopetegui has to sort things out quickly if this season is not going to be a write-off.
West Ham might not have deserved the 5-1 defeat to Liverpool, but we were still beaten comfortably in the end.
And as Aaron Cresswell says, Edson Alvarez certainly didn’t help matters at Anfield.
