West Ham United signed Thilo Kehrer from Paris Saint-Germain back in the summer of 2022.
However, Thilo Kehrer struggled badly with consistency during his time at the London Stadium, so it was no surprise when West Ham moved him on to Monaco 18 months later.
Kehrer left the Hammers to join Monaco on loan in January, and they had an obligation to buy him, as long as he played a certain amount of games.
The German obviously met that criteria, and now he is now a Monaco player on a permanent basis.
He was often the target for criticism from the West Ham fans, although he did recently suggest that he was never played in his best position during his time in East London – centre-back.
In fairness to him, he has looked very good indeed for Monaco, when playing in central defence.
So did the Hammers make a big mistake letting him go? Something has just happened that proves we actually didn’t get the best out of him.
Thilo Kehrer given honour and it highlights West Ham mistake
The Hammers sold Thilo Kehrer to Monaco in the summer for around £9.4 million (Claret and Hugh).
At the time, the majority of Hammers fans rejoiced, but now it looks like we could have made a very big mistake indeed.
Kehrer spoke to reporters after he was named captain for Monaco during their clash with Le Havre – their 100th anniversary game.
He told Foot Sur:
“It’s always an honour to wear the armband of a team (against Le Havre last weekend, editor’s note), even more so when it’s a club like AS Monaco.“
If he’s being trusted to lead his team out – a side competing in the Champions League this season by the way, surely he would have been able to make a difference for us this season.
Thilo Kehrer thriving at Monaco after West Ham exit
The Germany international is the vice-captain at Monaco, and he was handed the armband for the Le Havre clash because club captain Denis Zakaria was on the bench.
At a time when West Ham desperately lacked leaders last term, perhaps David Moyes should have lent on the 28-year-old more than he did.
Kehrer’s team have made a fantastic start to the season, having won five and drawn one of their opening six Ligue 1 outings.
Monaco are currently second in the table behind PSG only because of an inferior goal difference.
In four outings for Monaco this season, the 28-year-old German has averaged three tackles, four clearances and 2.3 successful aerial duels per game. He has made 69.5 passes per match and has recorded a completion rate of 91% (Who Scored).
Perhaps West Ham should not have given up so quickly on Thilo Kehrer. I guess that’s easy to say in hindsight, but right now it really does look like a big mistake from the club.
