Edson Álvarez has been named in Mexico’s squad for their upcoming matches during the October international break. The West Ham midfielder was absent from the September fixtures as he recovered from an injury sustained in the Copa America match against Jamaica.
Álvarez had also missed West Ham’s pre-season training camp and has only recently regained full fitness. Despite his recovery, the Mexican international showed glimpses of his aggressive, high-energy style during the 5-1 Carabao Cup loss to Liverpool, where he was controversially sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Mo Salah.
His inclusion in Mexico’s squad has sparked concerns within the West Ham camp, especially considering his injury history and disciplinary issues. Álvarez’s absences are are sure to have the coaching team looking on nervously, given his importance to Julen Lopetegui’s line-up. Although former Club América teammate Guido Rodríguez was signed as a backup, he lacks the speed and athleticism needed to thrive in the fast-paced Premier League. Rodriguez is okay filling in from time to time but he can’t cover the same amount of ground as the energetic Alvarez.
Mexico is set to face Spanish side Valencia in a special friendly match at the Cuauhtémoc Stadium in Puebla on Saturday, October 12, with the exact kick-off time still to be announced.
