West Ham United head coach Julen Lopetegui has endured a whirlwind start to life in charge at the London Stadium.
Julen Lopetegui replaced David Moyes in charge of West Ham officially on July 1st, and he signed nine new players in the summer transfer window.
However, things haven’t gone quite to plan for the Spaniard so far, although Saturday’s 4-1 win over Ipswich Town eased the pressure on him significantly.
The problem for Lopetegui is that things are set to get even more difficult for him, with six incredibly tough Premier League games lying in wait for us.
Before the Ipswich game, there was even talk of the Spaniard getting the sack if results didn’t improve quickly, but he has apparently assured the board that he will turn things around.
The West Ham owners backed Lopetegui to the hilt in the transfer market in the summer, and now the onus is on the Spaniard to start producing consistently.
If he doesn’t do exactly that, yet more questions will be asked of the former Sevilla and Wolves boss.
It’s something that he’s not very fond of it seems – questions being asked of him…
West Ham reporter shares why Julen Lopetegui wasn’t happy at all
The Spaniard has seemed extremely antsy at times when speaking to the press this season.
He has faced fierce criticism from fans and pundits alike, but has always insisted that he is the man to take the Hammers to the next level.
And now Athletic journalist Roshane Thomas has lifted the lid on how Lopetegui has reacted to the criticism of him.
Thomas said, “Ahead of the 1-1 draw against Brentford, the stern look on Lopetegui’s face showed he was not best pleased about questions over his abilities.“
Now, it’s fine for Lopetegui to back himself and have full faith in his own abilities.
In fact, I think that’s a very good thing.
However, He must understand why some fans and pundits have been critical of him.
Before the win over Ipswich, the style of football has been turgid, and we’ve been painful to watch at times.
There has been no clear footballing identity on display from the Hammers players, no visible patterns of play and the pace at which they’ve been playing has been far too slow.
Julen Lopetegui needs to learn how to accept criticism from the West Ham fans, because if we don’t like what we’re seeing, we’ll let him know about it.
Let’s hope that Saturday’s 4-1 win proves to be the turning point in our season.
