West Ham United earned a vital three points in the Premier League against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
The performance from the West Ham players against Ipswich was their best one of the Premier League season so far, and Julen Lopetegui would’ve been delighted with the result.
The win certainly eased the pressure on the Spaniard’s shoulders.
Before the Ipswich game, there was talk of the Spaniard getting the sack if results didn’t improve quickly, but he apparently assured the board that he will turn things around.
And the 4-1 win was very timely indeed.
The problem for Lopetegui is that things are set to get even more difficult for him, with six incredibly tough games lying in wait for us.
However, if our big players show up, we will be right in with a chance of picking up points over the next few weeks.
The win over Ipswich will hopefully be a big turning point in our season. And the Hammers fans watching the game would have enjoyed a good old chuckle after witnessing the performances of two players in particular…
Two worst players on the pitch during West Ham vs Ipswich
It was a really interesting game to watch, and we dominated proceedings overall.
There was a really shaky 10-15 minute spell inside the first-half, but the boys emerged from it unscathed.
One thing that was really interesting was the performances of two specific players.
Kalvin Phillips and Ben Johnson endured shocking afternoons, and were far and away the worst two players on the pitch.
Phillips was at fault for two goals, and he looked miles off the pace throughout the game.
Meanwhile, Johnson was caught out positionally on numerous occasions. The 24-year-old was nowhere near good enough, just like he was during his days at the London Stadium.
It baffles me that some of our fans thought he should be given a new contract.
The performances from West Ham’s star players, combined with the atrocious showings by Ipswich Town duo Phillips and Johnson vindicated some of the moves Lopetegui made in the summer.
It was hilarious seeing Phillips being sent for a hot dog by Jarrod Bowen, and Johnson struggling to keep up with Mohammed Kudus and Emerson Palmieri down our left hand flank.
The win was a much needed one for the Hammers, and the displays of Phillips and Johnson were the cherries on top of a very sweet cake.
