West Ham United director of football Tim Steidten has bizarrely weighed into a controversy surrounding a rival Premier League player.
Tim Steidten has been at West Ham for 15 months now, and has overseen numerous exciting transfers for the club.
The German had a big say in the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as well, and believes that the Spaniard is still very much the right man for the job.
The Hammers have made a slow start to the 2024/25 campaign. Weirdly, Steidten seems to be escaping criticism entirely.
At the end of the day, he was the man behind eight of the nine summer signings, allegedly.
He has nearly as much to answer for as Lopetegui in my opinion. Hopefully the West Ham players will start producing, because the money that’s been spent should be conducive with a top seven finish.
Steidten is clearly a man who likes the spotlight. He is often seen on the pitch at the London Stadium before games, and he even partook in a pre-match interview with Sky Sports a couple of weeks ago!
He has been talking to reporters again, but this time about something that does not concern West Ham…
West Ham DOF Tim Steidten criticises rival Premier League star
Steidten is well known for working around the clock when it comes to identifying transfer targets for the Hammers.
In fairness, that’s what he should be doing. As Roy Keane would say, it’s his job!
However, it appears as though Steidten’s attention has drifted to a controversy surrounding a player who represents one of our Premier League rivals.
Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno was just called up to the Germany national team squad.
However, the 32-year-old rejected the opportunity to represent his nation – a decision that Steidten seemingly took umbrage to.
The German shared his opinion on the matter, as quoted by German publication Sport 1.
Steidten said, “The workload in the Premier League is of course high, I can understand Leno’s point on that. But my personal opinion is: When the national team calls, you have to go.“
It’s fair enough for Steidten to have that opinion, but why on earth is he even bothering to get involved?
Should he not just be entirely focused on scouting players, and identifying targets for January and next summer?
In my opinion, the 45-year-old has engineered some terrific signings for the Hammers, since he took over as our director of football in the summer of 2023.
However, a lot of work still needs to be done.
Tim Steidten should be entirely focused on setting up some top tier transfers for West Ham – nothing more, nothing less.
The Bernd Leno situation is absolutely nothing to do with him.
