A journalist has given West Ham hope of signing an ‘explosive’ star they watched at the weekend but then dropped a Liverpool bombshell.
West Ham and Liverpool were at opposite ends of transfer spectrum over the summer.
The Hammers spent over £155m to sign nine players for new boss Julen Lopetegui.
Meanwhile Liverpool went about things very differently to usher in the post Jurgen Klopp era under Arne Slot.
The Reds kept their powder mostly dry, with Federico Chiesa their only signing.
West Ham are actually the Premier League’s fifth biggest spenders since 2022 while Liverpool don’t even make the top six.
Many Hammers fans are concerned the spending will eventually have to be offset by another sale of one of the club’s top stars.
A top West Ham insider revealed last month that may be Mohammed Kudus, who has a release clause in his contract active again from next summer.
Kudus has been linked with Liverpool, who may be waving goodbye to Mo Salah at the end of the season.
So both West Ham and Liverpool could soon be looking for replacements for their star players.
Hammers and Liverpool lining up Mo replacements?
And it seems that may have put them on a collision course for one particular target.
Irons technical director Tim Steidten, who was previously linked with Liverpool, has stated West Ham are a five-year project.
He wants to build the club around younger, exciting talent.
One star he reportedly wants to bring to West Ham is Omar Marmoush.
The Egyptian has been dubbed ‘the new Salah’ and is a player West Ham have been tracking since Steidten’s arrival last year.
The Hammers were one of several clubs who had Marmoush watched as he scored two and laid on an assist in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 3-3 draw against European giants Bayern Munich on Sunday.
It was recently claimed that Marmoush is ‘likely to join West Ham’ in January.
The 25-year-old can play across the forward line – including as a striker.
And Steidten has made it clear West Ham want versatile players who can play in multiple positions.
It seems the east Londoners have a big problem in the shape of Liverpool, though.
A journalist gave West Ham hope of signing the ‘explosive’ star then dropped a Liverpool bombshell.
West Ham given Marmoush hope then Liverpool bombshell drops
After it was revealed West Ham are ‘ones to watch’ for Marmoush, Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg shared a major update.
Plettenberg stated that Frankfurt have been trying to get Marmoush to sign a new deal.
But amid the Premier League interest he has been ‘hesitating’ to accept and it is suggested a deal could be done in the summer.
“Understand that Eintracht Frankfurt want to extend the contract of Omar Marmoush until 2028 with a higher salary as via Bild,” Plettenberg said.
“But currently, the 25-year-old top striker is hesitating to accept this new offer. Unless something extraordinary happens or a top club makes an offer, he is expected to stay in winter after a perfect start with eight goals and four assists this Bundesliga season.
“Contract valid until 2027, with no release clause included. Marmoush has drawn interest from the Premier League.”
That had many West Ham fans excited, especially after it was claimed Frankfurt could be willing to sell for as little as £25m.
But no sooner had Plettenberg made the claim than he dropped a big Liverpool claim that will crush West Ham’s hopes.
Because he says Marmoush is very much now on Liverpool’s list too.
“Omar Marmoush is on the list of Liverpool,” Plettenberg added in a further update.
“The Reds are closely monitoring his situation. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt want to extend his contract early by one year until 2028. Without a release clause.
“The top priority for the SGE is to keep the 25-year-old top striker in the winter. Nine goals and six assists in all competitions so far.”
Steidten can do it again but Liverpool cash reserves a problem
Steidten has proved he can help West Ham beat top clubs to star talent.
But Liverpool will clearly have big money to spend after a frugal summer and may have a Salah shaped hole to fill.
The Reds will also likely be able to offer Champions League football too.
West Ham may still fancy their chances with the London factor – and if Liverpool don’t firm up their interest.
So the Marmoush situation is certainly one to watch.
