Ambition is not lacking amongst West Ham’s young stars of the future: Already the club have spent over €20 million on young Brazilian Luis Guilherme and brought him and his family half way around the world. Luis took his first steps in the Premier League against Ipswich Town and looked right at home.
From closer to home, Hammer Callum Marshall has been talking of his plans to excel within a youthful Northern Ireland side. On loan at league one side Huddersfield, Marshall has huge ambition and speaks frankly of his dreams. For one so young, the nineteen year old is learning to play with a maturity that is already getting him into the senior Northern Ireland squad. Speaking to belfasttelegraph.co.uk, the young Hammers forward admits playing for his country offers different challenges:
“The left [side, number] 10 is where the manager wants me to do a job because he knows I’ve got a good left foot and can run in behind: At my club, I’ve been playing striker so I’m getting to learn different roles and positions which will do me good in the long run but obviously the aim for me in the future is to hopefully become the striker for Northern Ireland.”
No lack of ambition for the future. Speaking about representing his country at tournaments to come, Marshall again: ”
“That would be class, It would be great to experience it. We have a really young team now and we have some class youngsters, especially Conor (Bradley). He’s a joke, he’s so good!
“We have all the boys in the squad now and there are boys from my West Ham team like Michael Forbes and Patrick Kelly who will come into the senior squad at some point and we will have a seriously good side.”
Marshall’s energy leaps out of the screen, he is one to watch over the coming international break if you happen to see Northern Ireland featured. His progress has been rapid, and he is another exciting prospect for both West Ham and his national team in the very near future.
