West Ham forward Callum Marshall made a significant impact in Northern Ireland’s emphatic victory last night, though the role he played may have surprised a few. The young striker, while facing a recent goal drought, has maintained decent form which seems to have opened up an opportunity for him.
In the match against Bulgaria, Marshall was deployed in an unexpected position as a left-sided attacking midfielder.
Marshall contributed to Northern Ireland’s dominant 5-0 triumph, a win that propelled them to the top of UEFA Nations League Group C3.
Currently on a season-long loan at Huddersfield Town, Marshall started the match at Windsor Park, helping his side build on their previous away draw against Belarus.
With two games remaining, Northern Ireland are in control of their own promotion fate, leading the group with seven points from four matches.
Reflecting on his new role, Marshall said, “The manager wants me to play as a left 10 because he knows I’ve got a strong left foot and can make runs in behind. At my club, I’ve been playing as a striker, so learning different roles is beneficial for me in the long run. But my ultimate goal is to become Northern Ireland’s main striker in the future.”
