Max Kilman has just endeared himself even more so to the West Ham United fans ahead of our encounter with Tottenham.
West Ham signed Max Kilman from Wolves in the summer transfer window for a mammoth £40 million fee.
Despite criticism from some fans and pundits regarding the fee, the deal to bring the 27-year-old defender to the Hammers was a sensational one.
Julen Lopetegui will be delighted to have Kilman at the London Stadium, and the Hammers head coach clearly trusts him to the hilt – he was in contention to be given the captain’s armband back in the summer.
Jarrod Bowen was made skipper in the end, but Kilman is undoubtedly one of out main leaders out on the pitch and inside the dressing room.
The former Wolves man is already a hugely popular figure at the London Stadium, and now that cult hero status will be inflated even more so.
The 6ft 4in centre-back has already firmly established himself as a vitally important player in Lopetegui’s side.
Kilman has an incredibly strong mentality, and he leads by example at the back.
The Hammers will need him to be at his very best tomorrow lunchtime in north London.
Kilman shared his excitement ahead of facing Spurs on Saturday at 12:30, when speaking with WHUFC.com.
“We can’t wait for it,” Kilman told whufc.com. “I’ve heard from the players what it means to the Club and the fans. But that is something to enjoy. These are the type of games you want to be involved in. As a player, I love the challenge of these sorts of games, so it is a game that we all have to be excited for.
“There’s a lot of pressure in the games, especially with it being a derby, but this is why we play football, and I feel I thrive under the pressure of performing,” Kilman continued.
“There’s been ups and downs throughout the early season, but we’ve got a new manager, a new squad, and it’s going to take time, but we’re in a good position now and are getting stronger each week. We’re in a good position now and have been working really hard, and the understanding [of how the manager wants them to play] is getting there, so it’s a great time to go and play this weekend against Tottenham.”
How good is that to hear.
Personally, I think Max Kilman should have been named the West Ham club captain in the summer.
As good as Jarrod Bowen is, he just isn’t captain material. Meanwhile, Kilman possesses leadership qualities in abundance.
The 27-year-old has been the standout performer for the Hammers this season, by a long way in my opinion.
Hopefully he’ll put in a top-class display for the Hammers against Tottenham tomorrow, and guide us on to victory against our fiercest rivals in the Premier League.
