As part of the fall-out from that defeat, much is written about the head coach, the team, the tactics and the mistakes made. West Ham surrendering a lead to lose 4-1 certainly provides plenty of ammunition: Some even calling for Lopetegui’s head after just eight Premier League games which seems a little reactionary, however much it hurts losing to Spurs in such a meek capitulation.
Jarrod Bowen the captain is learning his trade and going through a challenging time indeed right now as his leadership is questioned: Jarrod Bowen the player can hold his head high as his statistics in that performance bear close scrutiny. Tackling-back and doing his defensive duties, Bowen performed admirably, recovering the ball six times with six duels and three successful tackles.
His attacking contribution in the first half almost led to one Kudus’ goal – well saved by the Spurs keeper – which led to Alan Shearer on MOTD describing it as a “wonderful ball in’.
Just eight minutes later, Bowen’s tenacity and wing play did lead to his providing the assist for his team-mate. In a game so disappointing, Bowen is one of the few Hammers who escapes criticism and came out of it looking worthy of his place in the starting eleven.
Quite how ‘Bowen the captain’ grows into the role is another matter – full marks for supporting his player in the fisticuffs which followed, but helping his head coach implement strategy is a bigger challenge altogether. No doubt Mark Noble will be on hand for guidance but this is a stressful time for Bowen every bit as much as Lopetegui.
If he is to succeed he needs to find away to project his leadership on the team.
Leading by example is fine and from the stats above Bowen clearly stands out – but sometimes a little more blood-and-thunder is needed to bawl out those around him who have lost concentration on their role in the game plan.
