Tim Steidten set West Ham United Crysencio Summerville a big challenge back in the summer.
West Ham signed Crysencio Summerville from Leeds in the summer transfer window, for a fee believed to be worth around £20 million.
The 22-year-old was sensational for the Hammers against Manchester United at the London Stadium when he came on as a half-time substitute, and watching his interactions with Mohammed Kudus after his goal was like food for the soul.
With Kudus out through suspension for a minimum of three games, Summerville will now be given a big chance to shine by Julen Lopetegui.
Quite why the Spaniard didn’t start Summerville is anyone’s guess, but the West Ham head coach has surely learnt from that mistake now.
I fully expect to see the former Leeds man really come into his own over the next few weeks and months now.
He proved yesterday that he has what it takes to make a big difference at the very highest level of the game.
And perhaps Tim Steidten is the man who was really behind Summerville’s exceptional cameo against Manchester United.
Challenge Tim Steidten set Crysencio Summerville in July
The Dutchman finally announced himself on the biggest stage for the Hammers on Sunday during our 2-1 win over Manchester United.
He looked every inch a Premier League superstar in the making with the way that he took the game to the Man United defenders.
And I think the seeds for that performance were planted back in the summer, by Steidten.
Back in July, just before Summerville flew over to England to complete his move to West Ham, Steidten set Summerville a very big challenge.
“Having travelled to Amsterdam on a private jet, Steidten challenged Summerville to become a success like Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez on the flight back to London. He outlined why being average would not be good enough and the need for the forward to develop into a top-tier signing.“
After Summerville’s heroics for the Hammers yesterday, that challenge from Steidten now looks very interesting.
The 22-year-old certainly stood up and answered the gauntlet laid down by the German.
The former Leeds winger looks like he has exactly what we’ve been lacking for years now.
Summerville’s pace, power, dynamism and exceptional acceleration out wide on the left should provide us with a completely different facet to our attacking play.
When Kudus is back from suspension, Lopetegui simply has to move him into the number 10 position, allowing Summerville to continue on the left wing.
The Dutchman produced the best 45-minute performance I have seen from a West Ham player this season.
And maybe Tim Steidten should be given some praise for challenging Crysencio Summerville just before he signed for the Hammers.
