Sporting Lisbon have confirmed how much Manchester United paid them for manager Ruben Amorim.
Amorim’s appointment at the Red Devils was finally confirmed on Friday, with the Portuguese taking over from Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman was sacked on Monday.
He will take charge after the international break, serving a notice period in Portugal and overseeing three more Sporting games, including a Champions League tie against Manchester City next week.
His first game in charge of United will therefore be on November 24 when the Red Devils travel to Ipswich in the Premier League.
And in their own statement announcing the 39-year-old’s departure, Sporting have detailed the fee paid by Amorim’s new team.

United also paid extra to cut short the Portuguese’s notice period at current club sporting
‘Sporting SAD has reached an agreement with Manchester United FC regarding terms and conditions of coach Ruben Amorim’s departure, in return for which MUFC will pay Sporting SAD Euro 11,000,000 (£9.2million),’ they wrote.
‘Furthermore, Sporting SAD will have a benefit of Euro 1,658,000 (£1.4m) relating to the extinction of credit rights, recorded as liabilities and contingent liabilities, as a result of the revocation and renegotiation of contracts relating to intermediation fees.’
The additional £1.4m was paid to cut short Amorim’s notice period, which was understood to be a month long.
That would potentially have meant United would have had to have waited until December for him to start work, which would have been in another five or six games.
Instead, it will be just three more games with interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy before the international break, which is when Amorim will begin work.
Van Nistelrooy, who has made his desire to stay at the club under the new coaching set-up known in recent days, will lead the team in home games against Chelsea, PAOK and Leicester.
He said of staying on at the club: ‘It’s going to be short job as an interim – that was communicated very clearly, and I was happy with that,’ he said. ‘I decided to come back here for a very important reason: that I am here as an assistant, I came here to help the club forward and I am still very motivated to do so in any capacity, as an assistant and now an interim.
‘After this I go back to my assistant contract I have here for this season and next. I am very motivated to stay here and help the club forward.
‘We will see but it is the contract situation I am in, and my desire to help the club forward. I can speak to you about my side of the story and after the when the new manager is signing and conversations take place, we have to see how things develop.’
He will take charge during the international break, with three more games to be played before then
Sporting will take on Manchester City in the Champions League next week and also play two league matches
Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in interim charge of United, who also play three more games, during that time
United also released a statement confirming the appointment of Amorim, writing: ‘Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.
‘He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.
‘Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.
‘Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins.’
