Enzo Maresca has admitted Chelsea are ahead of his expectations after almost four months in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian was named as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor in the summer and signed a five year deal after guiding Leciester City to the Championship title last season.
Many raised doubts about Maresca’s appointment, with Manchester United legend Paul Scholes recently admitting he was wrong about the 44-year-old.
Chelsea ahead of Maresca’s expectations at this point
It appeared Chelsea could be in for a difficult start following their pre-season but they have mad an impressive start under Maresca.
The Blues currently sit fifth, just one point behind Arsenal in third following their win against Newcastle last weekend.
What’s impressive is how quickly Maresca has been able to get his idea’s across to the players and formulate a clear style and identity, which were missing last season.
The Blues have impressed going forward, but there are still question marks surrounding them defensively, especially with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, although Maresca recently stated he’s still the club’s number one.
Chelsea have definitely started better than many expected as they look to get back into the Champions League, with Maresca admitting they are ahead of his expectations at this point in time.
“I’m very happy because the way we want to play, on and off the ball, is quite clear,” he said as cited on X.com.
“In terms of process, we are ahead of my expectations after almost four months, and the results are okay, so we can continue like that.”
It’s still very early days and the signs do look promising, with it exciting for fans that the team still has so much improvement it can make.
Having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup in midweek by Newcastle, Maresca will be hoping for a statement victory against Manchester United on Sunday as the Blues look for a first win at Old Trafford since 2013.
