Alphonse Areola has lost his place to Lukasz Fabianski in the West Ham United starting lineup.
And it could all be set to go downhill for the 31-year-old Frenchman now.
West Ham signed Alphonse Areola from Paris Saint-Germain on loan in the summer of 2021, before making his move a permanent one a year later for around £8 million.
However, the 6ft 5in stopper hasn’t hit the heights that were expected of him.
Areola is a fantastic shot-stopper, one of the best in fact, but he is incapable of commanding his penalty area with any kind of authority.
The Frenchman has also proven that he is not comfortable with the ball at his feet one little bit.
Now Areola has been dealt a real hammer blow…
Bad news for West Ham after Alphonse Areola is dealt blow
Things are looking pretty bleak for the Hammers right now.
Lopetegui is a man under real pressure at the moment, and he could lose his job this weekend, regardless of the result against Everton.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Kudus has just been handed a further two-game ban by the FA, after his red card for violent conduct during our defeat to Tottenham last month.
And now, there’s some more bad news coming our way, although this time more for an individual rather than the team.
Le Parisien claim that Areola could be dropped from the French national team as a result of losing his place in the West Ham starting XI.
That would be no surprise at all really would it.
The former PSG man has been truly awful this season, and Fabianski has been more than deserving of winning his place in the team back.
Alphonse Areola has two choices now – he either bucks up his ideas and works incredibly hard to improve and force his way back into the West Ham starting lineup, or he moans and forces a move away from the club.
To be honest, I actually couldn’t care less if he picks the latter option. I don’t think he’s good enough for us anyway.
It will be interesting to see the Frenchman’s response to potentially losing his place in the national team squad.
