Tottenham Hotspur have been praised a lot for their playing style under head coach Ange Postecoglou and not only that, but the iconic Tottenham Hotspur stadium has also further enhanced the club’s position among football’s elite.
Nevertheless, despite having world-class players and a huge fanbase, the Lilywhites still have problems winning the trophies.
Need for a winning mentality
Lilywhites icon Glenn Hoddle believes that Spurs need to combine their attractive brand of football under Ange Postecoglou with a strong ambition to win titles. In a recent discussion, Hoddle made it clear that having one of the best stadiums and facilities in the world is not enough.
We have seen how winning mentality influences how we portray clubs, in the end it’s all about silverwares and Hoddle highlights how the need to impose a winning mentality should be among top priorities at White Hart Lane.
Speaking on Stick to Football’s Youtube channel, Hoddle said:
“You can have the best facilities, the best stadium, but it’s the winning mentality that counts. Spurs need to blend the club’s historical style with a push for trophies.”
The 67-year-old’s view point is something that the North London supports have been watching for some time now. All the near misses and disappointments have aggregated into this heavy tale of near misses and disappointments. Spurs have consistently been among Champions League football for a while and the club also came close to winning it with Mauricio Pochettino, however, none of the success on pitch have materialised into trophies with the Lilywhites last major success coming in 2008 when they won the League Cup.
Now, the challenge for Ange and his staff is to find this balance between playing an attractive brand of football and actually winning trophies (something that the Australian head coach has been really bullish about). The club and the fans have demanded very high standards when it comes to its playing style, however now it is about matching that drive and demand for winning trophies.
Signs of change at Tottenham under Ange
The current Tottenham squad under manager Ange Postecoglou has shown early signs of being committed to winning and the former Celtic coach has implemented a style of play that is deemed one of the best in the league as the Australian plays a fast-paced and aggressive brand of football. But even so, long-term success and materialising into a culture will require this drive to be converted into demand around the club and it’s stakeholders.
